Culture in England

Get to Know Culture and Habits in England. To avoid culture shock, prospective international students studying in the UK (United Kingdom), are required to find out information about the country and city of their destination. The UK has a thick culture and history and habits so knowing their culture and habits can help risk culture shock and adapt more easily.

1. Campus Life

Life on campus is usually quite relaxed and informal where students can chat warmly with campus staff regarding both academic and non-academic issues. Even though not all professors are friendly and open, you will still enjoy chatting with other professors. You can also visit support services for international students and join groups of students from both their home countries and others.

2. Meet and Socialize

British society sometimes prefers a slightly formal handshake with eye contact. It's also considered impolite to ask questions about age and finances, so talk about other things like the news or the weather. Even though the English people may seem unfriendly at first, they will become warmer as you get used to them and get to know them.

3. Meal Procedures

The British way of eating is continental, namely the fork on the left and the knife on the right. After finishing eating, place the two cutlery side by side on the lower right side of the plate. However, this tradition is not widely used if you prefer to eat in cafes, small restaurants, or in non-English restaurants that do not require cutlery.

4. Sports

When talking about England, sports enthusiasts will immediately mention the names of famous football clubs in England. British people really love sports, especially football. They generally have their own favorite teams and fill their stadiums, pubs, or homes to watch together. Apart from football, other sports which are also popular in England are rugby, horse racing, boxing, cricket and athletics. England also has many parks where you can run. Universities offer sports facilities and clubs ranging from football to belly dancing. You can also adventure up the mountains in England such as Mount Snowdon in North Wales.

5. Dress

You may be surprised when you see the clothes worn at the university. Students tend to choose comfort and weather-appropriate options, which tend to be quite relaxed and informal. You'll want to invest in a good jacket so you get to campus dry, rather than sitting in wet clothes throughout your lectures. If you are attending an interview, whether as part of your admissions process or for a part-time or full-time job, it is customary to dress smartly in a suit or blouse.
